It’s been said that everything we needed to know we learned in kindergarten. And while that was a formative year for me, it’s my Midwestern upbringing that shaped me as a person, a colleague, and a leader. These simple, powerful tenets serve me well and help to temper the inevitable edge that is easy to develop living in the Big Apple. I AM MY WORK ETHIC – I value smart, hard work. And I enjoy the challenges and struggles that come with the learning process. I learned this from parents who expected me to excel at school and hold down a job, sometimes two, from the time I was old enough to secure a worker’s permit. I LEAD BY EXAMPLE – I won’t ask anyone to do anything I haven’t done or won’t do myself. I understand and embrace the value of planning, big picture thinking, empowering my team, and delegating. But, I’m also always ready to roll up my sleeves and get the job done, whether that means writing this week’s social media posts, pulling together a last-minute presentation, or sorting finisher medals at 4:00 AM on race day. KINDNESS IS MY DEFAULT – I know the value of sending a handwritten thank-you note. I give honest praise and credit where it is due to bolster my colleagues, to motivate my team, and to demonstrate that I lead from a place of positivity. I VALUE CONNECTIONS – I’m that loyal guy who is in touch with past co-workers, people I have met in my travels, experts I encountered on social media, and even friends I have known since grade school. I wouldn’t have made it from Ohio to New York City or have the career I do today without my network. And I continue to work on it all the time. Speaking of connections, hit me up. Let’s talk about what we can do together. You can reach me here on LinkedIn, at 917-306-1206, or ericwhunter@gmail.com.
