Learning from 25 years of Observability ExperienceMy career begin as a network engineer, quickly diving into the 0’s and 1’s of IP infrastructures. My first exposure to ‘observability’ was in 1999, an integrated FCAPS solution for the telecom industry and I was hooked. Having spent over 20 years through various startups focused on metrics, logs and distributed tracing it became clear the same movie would continue to play out - scalability will always be a challenge due to the inherent needs within each of the observability pillars. The problem of scale has been enhanced by having much data to know what to use. Too much data is creating a problem of costs and ROI and scale is impacting teams due to the tradeoff of budget vs. performance.Telemetry (Observability) Pipelines have entered the picture as a unique approach to solve the observability data challenge. What they will do for the future of observability includes:* Improved scale (teams and tools) while optimizing costs* Profiling and categorizing data sources* Intelligent routing for maximizing usefulness * Dynamic action for faster response and increased application resilienceThis is what my current company’s mission is to solve - maximizing the use of observability data to assure application developers and SRE teams will assure application performance, health and resilience.
