About Erik Gonzalez-Leon, Ph.D.

I received my Ph.D. (March 2022) in Biomedical Engineering at UC Irvine, training under the tutelage of Distinguished Professor Dr. Kyriacos Athanasiou. My research focused on tissue engineering a spectrum of mechanically robust cartilaginous tissues; the goal of my work was to begin translation of these technologies from the bench to the clinical bedside and help patients with cartilage injuries return to a pain-free, active lifestyle. My scientific curiosity is piqued by impactful technologies that can alleviate health problems within society, and this serves as my inspiration for seeking out novel opportunities and projects to tackle within the biomedical space; past experiences have allowed me to refine my communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills through working on various teams that span several fields within biomedical engineering.
