As with my later Geologist Challenger role, I provided prospect-level petroleum systems analysis including support for lease sales, basin modeling, geochemical analysis, subsurface well support. The key difference is that this role was more independent. This role enabled me to see a lot more of the Gulf, and I was able to gain much more experience in prospect delivery and well planning.

I was rotated away from the Eagle Ford team in November 2011, ending up on the Central team in GoMX. Here, I supported prospect, well, and lease sale activities in Green Canyon. Initially, I focused on more conventional geology (well log interpretation, for example), but my interest in geochemistry led to a more petroleum systems focused role. Using Genesis and Trinity models, and geochemical data, I provided STS maps, charge budgets and timing, fluid properties, and temperature estimates. Using BP internal software, I could then predict seal capacity and column heights.

A continuation of my internship project, in a way, when I started full time at BP I was assigned to the Eagle Ford reservoir management team. Over the course of a year and a half, I correlated well logs across several hundred wells, made numerous maps, helped plan over a hundred wells, geosteered 25 or so, worked post appraisal across a number of our wells, and in general provided geological support to the greater team. Other highlights include selecting core points at both planning and real-time stages, a major sour gas risk assessment, and an aquifer survey.
This project was a mix of literature search and well log correlation. The literature search provided the underpinning of course, including the tectonic and structural framework that influenced deposition, the global anoxic event that helped preserve organic matter, and so forth. The remainder of the project entailed well log correlations across some 125 wells, from the upper Edwards formation through the Eagle Ford and to the Anacacho, when present in logs. These correlations became maps, and the maps ultimately informed BP's return to the area.
