About Erik Lloyd

I have a passion for humanoid robotics, bionic prosthetic technology, human augmentation and neural interfaces. I aim to develop new ways of interfacing the human nervous system with artificial intelligence and robotics, enabling people to interact with computers and their environment in new ways, and expand the boundaries of human limitations.My Masters research was focused on myo-electric control systems for upper limb prothetics. During my studies I explored Deep-Learning applications in the development of high dexterity bionic arm control systems under the supervision of Dr. Ning Jiang. I graduated from this program in August 2019. During this time I also conducted research and development of a bionic arm for prosthetics/robotics research. I worked on every facet of the design/development process, including mechanical design, firmware programming, and electromechanical design. I developed a deep understanding of how to develop sophisticated human robotic systems that can restore human-level functionality.Some of my free time is also taken up by technology projects. Recently I have been developing a minimally invasive peripheral neural interface in the field of super-numerary control. I have also been working on a robotics project. Currently this work has taken the form of a single arm powered exoskeleton that uses brushless DC motors and a compact, customer designed multi-stage cycloidal reducer to assist in upper-arm movements. In the past few years I have been running Brink Bionics, working to take electronic hardware technology from the research stage, and convert it into useable consumer products. I founded Brink Bionics with Dr. Ning Jiang and Dr. Jiayuan He during my time at as a grad student in the Engineering Bionics Lab at the University of Waterloo. Brink Bionics is dedicated to developing neuro--enhancements for consumers. Our first product is Impulse, a bionic reaction-time enhancement for PC gamers.
