About Erik Olsen, Phd

My research in nuclear physics involved the following:-Utilizing high-performance computing to drastically speed up nuclear theory calculations.-Applying Bayesian machine learning techniques to gain deeper insights into nuclear theory calculations.-Employing web development do more easily share results. After spending over 10 years in this field, I am now leaving nuclear theory research for a new career; right now I am looking one in either data science or quantum computing, but am flexible to try new ideas as well.

Mar 2022 - Present

Research Fellow

Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium

This was a postdoc position where I further used high-performance computing to augment machine learning efforts into nuclear theory.I was responsible for developing and implementing the MPI for a Fortran 90 nuclear theory code as part of a project to develop a new energy density functional optimized with a committee of multilayer neural networks; developing and utilizing shell scripts to manage and run large-scale mass table calculations using that MPI; and developing Python 3 codes to calculate separation energies for projects using Bayesian model averaging to analyze the landscape of one and two-proton emission and to estimate the positions of the proton and neutron drip lines. My major accomplishments in this position were being invited to give a presentation on the current status of nuclear theory at the 2019 Nuclear Chemistry Gordon Research Seminar: Advancements in Nuclear Structure and Reactions Using Next-Generation Facilities and being selected as the Specialized Reader in Nuclear Theory for a Master student’s thesis committee whose project involved finding proton magic numbers in the nuclear pasta phases of neutron stars.

Jan 2019 - Dec 2020

Research Associate

East Lansing, Michigan, United States

This was a postdoc position where I incorporated web development and superheavy nuclei into my work.I was responsible for developing the HTML and CSS code for the website MassExplorer to compile, evaluate, and disseminate mass table calculations; supervising a graduate student in the development of MassExplorer's Plotting Tools subpage; supervising an undergraduate student in the development of MassExplorer's data correlation plots; developing and utilizing shell scripts to manage and run large-scale mass table calculations on superheavy nuclei using an updated Fortran 90 nuclear theory code; developing Python 3 codes to sort through those mass tables and to calculate and plot Q_alpha values for projects on alpha-decay trends in superheavy nuclei and using alpha-decay to identify new elements; and proofreading and editing colleagues' research papers and a graduate student's dissertation. My major accomplishments in this position were getting invited to give a presentation on my two-proton radioactivity research at the 5th International Conference of Proton-Emitting Nuclei (PROCON2015), using MassExplorer to facilitate a research project on the impact of nuclear mass uncertainties on the r-process, and publishing a first author paper on my research into the alpha-decay trends of superheavy nuclei.

Feb 2015 - Dec 2018

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Knoxville, Tennessee, United States

This was a brief postdoc position I took directly after defending my dissertation and getting my PhD.I was responsible for augmenting the Fortran 90 MPI routine of a Fortran 90 nuclear theory code to enable simultaneous calculations of the energy bounds for nuclear excited states; overseeing a graduate student in the completion and defense of their Master’s thesis on large-scale mass table calculations; and aiding my boss in the transition of their research group from the University of Tennessee to Michigan State University.

Aug 2014 - Jan 2015

Graduate Research Assistant

Knoxville, Tennessee, United States

This was my last job title as a graduate student (time overlap with the "Graduate Teaching Assistant" position below indicates when I had both listed responsibilities).I was responsible for developing and implementing a Fortran 90 MPI routine into a Fortran 90 nuclear theory code; developing and utilizing shell scripts to manage and run large-scale mass table calculations using that MPI on leadership class computers for a project to identify nuclei with asymmetric shapes; developing Python 2 codes to sort through mass tables and select particular items for future calculations; developing and modifying Python 2 and FORTRAN 77 codes to calculate Q-values and two-proton and alpha-decay lifetimes from mass table calculations for a project aimed at delineating the landscape of two-proton radioactivity; and overseeing undergraduate and graduate students in the sorting and extraction of information from mass table calculations. My major accomplishments in this role were publishing a first author on my two-proton radioactivity research and receiving a University of Tennessee Citation for Extraordinary Professional Promise Award in 2014.

Jul 2009 - Jul 2014

Graduate Teaching Assistant

Knoxville, Tennessee, United States

This was my first job title as a graduate student (time overlap with the "Graduate Research Assistant" position above indicates a time when I had both listed responsibilities).I was responsible for supervising 2-3 weekly lab sessions of approximately 20 students each for undergraduate astronomy and physics classes; supervising weekly telescope labs for the astronomy classes; creating and administering my own final exam for the astronomy lab sessions; creating and presenting 50 minute long recitation sessions before each physics lab session; and proctoring and grading students' astronomy and physics exams.I was given an Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in 2009 for my efforts in this position.
