My professional career, my life, has been about the pursuit of equity, be it racial, economic or gender based. I proudly spent 30 years serving farmworkers through service to the United Farm Workers and PCUN, both labor unions. In my new capacity as an independent consultant, I continue to foster innovation in agriculture, elevating the dignity of the essential women and men employed in the fields while building the industry's resilience.

National Vice PresidentUnited Farm Workers National Union Oct 2002 - Aug 2020Washington, United StatesI led the UFW's work developing programs that improved the lifes of farmworkers that were no predicated on collective bargaining. I co-founded the Equitable Food Initiative, a multi-stakeholder, certification and workplace skill development organization. I was also instrumental in founding CIERTO, an ethical international recruiting agency. At the outset of then pandemic, I led the union's negotiations with the WA agricultural employers resulting in an agreement that then became the basis of the rules the State subsequently adopted, establishing binding requirements at worksites, employer provided housing and transportation. I worked closely with farmworkers helping to elevate additional concerns to industry leaders, elected officials and the media. I have been interviewed widely; appearing in the New York Times Sunday Magazine, CNN, Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal and other publications. Before the UFW asked me to refocus my time on the development of new models, I directed the union's collective bargaining work in the Pacific Northwest. We tripled the union's membership, doing so using creative campaigns to achieve collective bargaining agreements, as neither Oregon or Washington have any laws that guide this process. -

Director Of OrganizingPcun Apr 1990 - Jul 2002Woodburn, Oregon, United StatesI started my career working in support of farmworkers as an intern at PCUN. I graduated to work in the organization's service center, completing the requisite forms to facilitate family reunification petitions. I was later asked to lead the organization's work to win collective bargaining agreements. In this capacity, we signed the first such agreement in Oregon's history. We led a national campaign in support of more than 1000 farmworkers throughout Oregon's Willamette Valley. During this time, we developed a sophisticated pesticide outreach and education program, which led to active engagement with farmworkers, EPA, and state agencies to both highlight the then current shortcoming of regulatory protections and failure to ensure adequate oversight of the same.
