Erik was an inaugural Distinguished Urban Fellow with Living Cities. Living Cities is the largest philanthropic collaborative in the country focused on urban issues. It includes nine of the largest foundations and five of the largest corporations in the world; and the partnership is largely driven by the chief executive officers and senior management at these institutions. The Living Cities approach is to pool the resources and influences of its members to affect systemic and systematic reform at the local level.

Mr. Sten served as a City Commissioner in Portland, Oregon from 1996-2008. In Portland's unique form of government, he led the city's nationally recognized work in housing and community development. Highlights of his work include a record level of local investment in affordable housing, cutting edge strategies that tie schools, services and housing together, and a 70 percent reduction in chronic homelessness. Sten led Portland's work on global warming; green strategies and community based economic development, as well as the Portland Fire Bureau. He was known for regional cooperation and worked with leaders throughout the State as a Board Member of the League of Oregon Cities.
