My role as a Kennebec Estuary Land Steward involves many different aspects of land conservation and stewardship. The majority of my time is split between two local area land trusts and The Nature Conservancy My work with the two land trusts is focused on assisting them through the land trust accreditation process by developing baseline documents for conservation easements, conservation easement monitoring and reporting, and writing management plans for preserves. Other tasks include: invasive plant removal; stream barrier assessments; road assessment; chainsaw operation; natural resource inventorying; collecting, post-processing, and mapping spatial data using GIS; natural community delineation; interpretation of legal documents and statutes; trail assessments; and conducting suitability assessments of culverts for fish passage.

As Conservation Aide I mapped wildlife management areas and water access sites for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (MDIFW). Surveys were scanned using a wide image scanner, geo-referenced, and digitized using ArcMap 9.3. I conducted forest management plan reviews using GIS to identify rare and/ or exemplary natural communities, rare plants, threatened or endangered species, and essential and/ or significant habitats. Findings from each review were compiled into a letter and checklist, and map if applicable, and sent to foresters. I was responsible for data entry into the MNAP Landowner relational database and the Environmental Review geo-database. I assisted in the development of the Online Biodiversity Encyclopedia relational database and created a relational database of coastal islands. I created maps for the Beginning with Habitat program, the Landowner Incentives program, and land acquisition maps. I also assisted MNAP ecologist in conducting ecological inventories and provided them with GPS technical support.

Through the Maine Conservation Corps Environmental Educator Program I assisted the Maine Department of Conservation-Bureau of Parks and Lands in conducting analysis of baseline documentation for the development of conservation easement monitoring protocols for state-held conservation easements. The analysis employed satellite change detection (using ERDAS IMAGINE software), interpretation of land-based features from aerial photography using GIS (e.g. gravel pits, roads, built structures, forest cuts, etc.) and administrative research. Monitoring involved the development and employment of conservation easement monitoring protocols, mapping conservation easement lands, writing monitoring reports, and registering conservation easements with the State Planning Office. Field data was collected using survey equipment and mobile GPS units. My responsibilities also included the development of a relational database for conservation easements. I obtained state certification for completing Microsoft Access levels I and II state training during my term with the Bureau of Parks and Lands.
