Two years ago, my sister, an Education Specialist at a charter school, and I created a Learning Center at Sacred Heart Parish School. Here students who struggle in the areas of Reading, Writing or Math can be accommodated. We administer informal and formal assessments to evaluate our student’s academic level and therefore be able to provide the services they need. The Learning Center seeks to provide the best academic atmosphere by allowing students to test in a separate setting, with no time limit, helping students avoid classroom distractions. Our services include push-in, going into the classrooms during instruction with the students, and pull-out, students come into our office for decoding, writing, reading fluency and comprehension programs. Additional services are also provided; these include Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy which are administered by an external provider and require an additional fee. We also coordinate with the public school district for further IEP testing if needed.

As a member of the Steering Committee for Learning Support in the Dioceses of San Diego, we are working towards generating tools and strategies to assist teachers and administrators in developing Learning Centers to support their struggling students. We have created resources tools, a website, and on-going seminars on learning support for grades TK- 12. We work in partnership with our private high schools and colleges.

Implemented 1:1 Ipad classroom and organized Boston trip with students to see first-hand where the American Revolution took place.
