Gilda'S Club Northern New Jersey
Gilda's Club Northern New Jersey is a non-profit organization serving people who have been touched by cancer. This includes adults and children with a current cancer diagnosis, adults and children who are cancer survivors, and people who love someone with cancer. The focus at Gilda's Club is on survivorship, and to that end the Club provides support groups, clinical interventions, and a program of activities designed to stimulate the body, the mind, and the spirit. As a licensed social worker, my role was to facilitate a weekly support group for adults with cancer as well as to conduct periodic family intervention sessions, which were designed to help promote the holistic navigation of the cancer experience from a family perspective. I oversaw independent mental health contractors, and I supervised administrative staff, social work interns, and volunteers. In addition to the clinical piece, I was heavily involved in marketing the organization, from serving on speakers’ bureau to prospective donors, community groups, and potential members, to participating in focus group research for a marketing campaign at Gilda’s Club Worldwide.Another large part of my role at Gilda’s Club Northern New Jersey was to seek in-kind donations of goods and services. As a non-profit, Gilda's Club enjoyed tremendous support from both corporate and local retailers within its community. The Club also was highly dependent upon its vibrant volunteer program. As part of overall program development for Gilda’s Club, I directed the volunteer program, which included recruitment, orientation, management, and retention.
