Some ventures are worth starting even if you can't finish them during your lifetime. Creating friendly Artificial Intelligence, extending human healthspan, protecting Earth from asteroids, electrifying the entire world's car fleet, reducing poverty, expanding out into the solar system and beyond--these are all examples of hyper-visionary ventures that advance human civilization but can take decades if not lifetimes to see through. Too few of us dare start them. Even fewer dare fund them. One of my life's goals is to help shift our civilization’s attention and capital out of trivial pursuits and into civilization-advancing ventures. To figure out what's worth doing, I co-wrote a book on the future of the human species. My current focus is figuring out how we transition to a low-emissions, closed material loop world. The global energy transition, rising living standards in the developing world and another 3 billion people on this planet by the end of this century will require hundreds of millions of tonnes of metal. Today, metal production comes with a host of serious, global scale, hard-to-solve environmental and social impacts. So how do we make sure that in our hurry to move away from fossil fuels we are not merely shifting the environmental and social impact burden from one extractive industry (oil & gas) to another (metals & mining). That's the problem we are working to crack at The Metals Company. In my previous life, I co-founded an industrial robotics company (OffWorld), a lunar mining company (Shackleton Energy), served as an executive at the Norwegian technology company TANDBERG (acquired by Cisco in 2010), ran a strategy firm in Dubai and spent 6 years as a consultant with McKinsey & Company where I co-led the Firm’s South-East Asian banking practice and managed large-scale performance transformations for banks in Asia-Pacific, Africa and Europe.

Chief Strategy OfficerThe Metals Company Dec 2018 - PresentVancouver, British Columbia, CaMoving away from fossil fuels means electrifying a billion cars and building tens of thousands of new renewable power plants. This green transition requires more than a terawatt-hour in new battery production capacity, which in turn requires millions of tons of new battery grade metals like nickel, cobalt and manganese as well as copper. Expected future supply gap for nickel (but also cobalt and copper) is seen as the major stumbling block for the electrification of the global car fleet. Furthermore, if these battery metals are supplied from conventional land-based mining sources, the green transition will come at an unacceptable environmental and social cost: more tropical deforestation, more toxic tailings, more social displacement and more child labor.DeepGreen is on a mission to supply the green transition with battery grade metals from a new, abundant, cleaner source that requires no mining—polymetallic nodules sitting unattached on the ocean floor. One day this century we expect all battery metals to be recycled—spelling the end of the world’s reliance on the extractive base metals industry. At DeepGreen, we see ocean nodules as the transitional resource that can get us there with the least environmental and social damage. We are committed to becoming the world’s most respected Clean Metals company, improving oceans’ health through our operations and minimizing our land-based impact through zero waste processing. -
Co-Founder & Head Of Machine IntelligenceOffworld Nov 2015 - Dec 2018Pasadena, California, UsI co-founded OffWorld with a purpose to develop a robotic workforce for heavy industrial jobs on Earth, Moon, asteroids & Mars. For the first three years, the company has been exclusively focused on prototyping underground mining robots that could break hard rock (Digger-bot) and collect & crush cuttings (Crusher-bot) for a terrestrial mining major client. My role at OffWorld consisted of-Board Director-Member of the Executive team focusing on strategy, branding, business development and funding-Head of Machine Intelligence responsible for the vision of human-teachable robots and building an in-house team of ML researchers & advisors to push the frontier of ML / deep reinforcement learning in physical robotic systems -
Co-Founder & Chief Strategy OfficerShackleton Energy Company Nov 2013 - Nov 2016There are billions of tons of water ice on the poles of the Moon. We are going to extract it, turn it into rocket fuel and create fuel stations in Earth's orbit. Just like on Earth you won't get far on a single tank of gas, what we can do in space today is straight-jacketed by how much fuel we can bring along from the Earth's surface. We can achieve low transportation cost in space if fuel and materials are extracted and transported not from Earth but from a lower gravity well - the Moon. The prerequisite for scaling multiple civilization challenges is establishing extraction and manufacturing operations on the Moon and creating a lunar supply chain of fuel, materials and structures.

Co-Founder & Product DesignerTransplanetary Aug 2014 - Oct 2015Space enthusiasm meets economics. Is space the new internet? Will lower launch costs bring about a boom in the space sector? Will the world's first trillionaires make their fortunes on asteroids? Will we have millions of people working and living in space any time this century? What's the next investment frontier in the emerging commercial space sector? We are building a human-tended analytics engine to help investors, analysts and enthusiasts look at the fundamentals and make up their own minds.

FuturistRoad: Infinity Feb 2013 - Aug 2014How do you build a business that pays the bills on the way to a grand vision? Although most of my waking hours now go into OffWorld, there is always time for a cup of coffee with people hell-bent on making a dent in the universe. It's hard to do/fund something that hasn't been done before. I have plenty of war stories and connections that may be of help.#hyper-visionaryventures #100yearbusinessplans #bighistory #thehumanproject #sharedvalue #collectiveimpact -
