Profile bio

About Erik Assadourian

At Worldwatch I researched sustainability for 16 years, and before that studied psychology, religion and anthropology, (while also taking a year to learn to organize). So it's not surprising that I've come to see the sustainability crisis as cultural in nature and the real solutions as necessarily cultural. My professional goal is to help redirect consumer cultures to being cultures oriented on sustainability, for this is the only way we'll stabilize the climate and the many other converging ecological and social crises. This started with the directing of State of the World 2010: Transforming Cultures: From Consumerism to Sustainability. This then led to a few efforts to help transform cultures--including co-designing Catan: Oil Springs, an eco-educational scenario for The Settlers of Catan, to help challenge gamers to think about key environmental issues, like climate change and the limits to growth, and designing a reality TV show, Yardfarmers, to help reintegrate small-scale farming and multi-generational households into American culture. This was brought to the stage of producing a trailer. Then in 2017, I directed Worldwatch's final State of the World report: EarthEd: Rethinking Education on a Changing Planet. This report explored how sustainability and resilience will need to be at the heart of education to prepare youth for the challenges to come.Since then I've written for a variety of publications and served as research and editing consultant for a series of foundations and environmental NGOs. I also serve on several organization boards. That and homeschooling my son have kept me busy!Specialties: Topics: Sustainability, consumerism, degrowth, cultural change, corporate responsibility, sustainable communities, environmental security, resilience, education for sustainable development, indicators of environmental well-being, ecological ethics, and educational games. Skills: research, writing, teaching, program management, editing, field organizing, web and social media management.

Listed skills include Sustainability, Research, Climate Change, Sustainable Development, and 25 others.
