For various client projects I have been involved in the design and development of custom high-tech software. My specialities include 3D computer graphics & visualisation, image processing, geographic information systems (GIS), data processing, and control of hardware devices (sensors and actuators, such as cameras, radar, sonar, lidar, and motion control systems).

Created the antenna scanner control software for the newly developed Low Temperature Near Field THz Chamber (LORENTZ) facility.This facility is unique in that it can test antennas in the frequency range of 50GHz - 1.5THz in a truly realistic space environment. The main vacuum anechoic chamber can accommodate instruments with a volume of 1900mm x 1900mm with a mass up to 500kg. The antenna under test can be temperature controlled from 80-390 Kelvin with future plans to go down to 4 Kelvin.Development and testing of the antenna scanner software has finished, but installation and qualification testing of the entire facility is still underway.

Development of the control software (using Python / Qt) for the microwave material characterisation facility.The Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) facility at ESTEC is situated in an anechoic EM-isolated chamber and allows high precision antenna measurements to be made at microwave frequencies. The material characterisation configuration allows to sample the BRDF of materials that may be used for antenna radomes, reflectors, polarisation selective surfaces, etc.The configuration consists of two antennas and a sample under test, which can be positioned and oriented in space using a combination of up to 10 high precision motion axes. At each desired location the complex signal is measured using a vector network analyser that has been tuned for the measurement by the operator (e.g. frequency range, bandwidth, power, and gating).The software allows the operator to define and execute a sequence of measurements, for instance to determine the specular or diffuse reflection or transmission of the material. The raw measurement can be further processed to derive material specific parameters (e.g. refractive index, relative permittivity, dielectric loss factor, and absorption).

Leading role in the development of next generation digital maps for autonomous driving (Using PostgreSQL / PostGIS, Python, C++).AND understands that the revolution of autonomous driving, parking, and many Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) necessarily depends on the next generation of digital maps. It was my privilege to be the leading actor for the development of these so-called HD maps.Our team investigated requirements for these maps, in terms of features, accuracy and latency, and worked with several partners to ensure that the results were applicable and achievable. As part of our efforts, we investigated and implemented several methods to acquire and process real-world data (e.g., IMU/GPS traces, Lidar point clouds, Camera images, and Radar) and to model and represent derived data in our HD map. Realisation of a sample HD map of the Dutch town of Schiedam was an important intermediary result. This HD map supports localisation, lane based routing, path planing, and topological queries.I expect work in this area will continue in the foreseeable future and play a major part in upcoming strategic choices of AND.

Hired to develop the control software for a near-field scanner for THz antennas. The system includes a 4-axis high precision motion platform that is used to place an antenna under test (AUT) at specific desired locations and a network analyzer to determine the characteristics of the AUT at each specific location. An important challenge is to reduce the total required measurement time, since it may involve scanning up to 100M locations while still requiring high accuracy.

Responsible for the design, development (C++11) and documentation of the inflight calibration processor (ICAL) for the short wave infrared (SWIR) channel of the TROPOMI instrument.TROPOMI is a multi-channel spectrometer that performs atmospheric monitoring at high temporal and spectral resolution, and it is the single payload of the ESA Sentinel-5P satellite.The ICAL SWIR processor is part of the operational data processing chain that converts raw measured payload data to calibrated physical units. This derived data is further processed to obtain detailed information about the occurrence and distribution of atmospheric gasses and aerosols.

Lead backend developer for the SDI Embedder version 5. The SDI Embedder is an application (written in C++ / Boost) that detects and embeds in real-time a watermark into SDI streams. SDI is a family of digital video interfaces that are dominantly used for transmission of uncompressed digital video signals (optionally including embedded audio and time code) within professional broadcasting facilities. The application can be monitored and controlled using a web frontend (based on HTML /JavaScript).
