Started a new engineering team focused on solving problems that spanned both SmugMug and Flickr, focusing on gaining efficiencies through shared development. Managed a team of senior individual contributors and technical leads. Assumed a lead role in managing data and operations teams during a search for a VP of Engineering.

Design and implementation of systems to ensure GDPR compliance. Assisting with Flickr acquisition and migrating the product out of Oath. Worked closely with multiple internal stake holders to implement solutions for migrating video transcoding for Flickr. Participate in interview panels for candidates seeking roles as director, manager and individual contributors. Assisted the VP of Engineering with ongoing operations of the data team until a director could be hired. Work closely with VP of Engineering to meet executive team goals and objectives of the company. Lead a weekly meeting of tech-leads to help ensure internal processes are able to run smoothly and key issues are discussed and resolved. Lead an architecture focused professional group within SmugMug focused on improving knowledge sharing. Contributed as an individual contributor on an infrastructure team.

Worked as an individual contributor until mid 2017 when I assumed a role as tech-lead on an infrastructure focused scrum team. Team projects included migrating from PHP 5.6 to 7.1, migrating to Elasticsearch, and building a data pipeline.As an IC, key projects included: Involvement in multiple facets of two product acquisitions; Phanfare and Picturelife. Integrating PayPal as a payment option into the shopping cart experience. Integrated and maintained multiple social network integrations including Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter. Provided additional product features based on customer feedback. Built a pipeline for ingestion of data into a data warehouse. Other responsibilities including ongoing pull request reviews, refactoring and modernizing code, pragmatically adding test-coverage to tightly coupled systems, any paying down technical debt while still delivering product to customers.

Created unique custom social media applications for leading law firms to further their social media strategy. Leveraged multiple data sources including Graph API (Facebook), OpenSocial (LinkedIn), and OAuth (Twitter) to deliver custom applications, tailored to the specific needs of law firms. Supported platform integrations with many third party services, including major email platforms.Built automation tools to streamline backend processes and reduce operational support including maintaining blogging platforms. Developed independent data aggregation services to provide statistics on trends on Facebook and Twitter (now known as X).

At a small scrappy startup, jobs performed often go beyond any official or unofficial title. Roles included architect, developer, sys-admin, dba, product designer, and everything in-between. Specific projects included implementing work queues, a/b testing frameworks, sharded and replicated databases, write through caches, and direct work with a host of cloud services, most notably Amazon Web Services to allow for rapid scale up and down for a highly variable application. As one of the first Facebook Platform applications, the service scaled from 0 to 8 million active users in less than one week.

Developed viral Facebook applications. Implemented and maintained cloud based services utilizing Amazon Web Services. Developed infrastructure scaling solutions for handling varied traffic patterns to save costs. Designed systems that seamlessly scaled from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of users in hours and back reducing operational costs.

Provided technology consulting and custom development focused on social media, e-commerce, web content management, application specification, infrastructure, data mining and workflow analysis. Worked with clients in diverse industries including legal, media, education, environmental, entertainment, gaming and culinary arts. Served companies of varying sizes fromone-person startups to large non-profits and everything in between. Also acted as an advisor to a small social network to help focus development strategy.

Served in a variety of roles including architect, developer, engineer, and manager. Worked with a small team to facilitate the integration of eNature.com into the National Wildlife Federation service. The sites serviced a combined annual reach of 9 million users. Reduced operational costs through consolidation of infrastructure.Implemented multiple e-commerce initiatives including an online giving program a self-service Backyard Wildlife Habitat certification process and other organizational initiatives, processing tens of thousands of transactions annually. Managed relationships with key internal and external stakeholders including executives and directors throughout the organization. Directly managed a team of 8 developers, designers, content producers and marketing roles (overlap in most positions) to deliver a redesigned site forged around a clear corporate vision, strategy and brand vision.

Selling, building, and maintaining industrial automation soldering robotics and component assembly systems. Role required travel to customer sites as well as trade show booth presence. Primary focus on tooling and fixtures; secondary on installation and service. Responsible for writing custom Mitsubishi PLC ladder logic software and coordinating core software changes with development team based in Switzerland. Additional responsibilities included updating electrical schematics to reflect customizations and diagraming custom modifications required for site installation.
