Different stoichiometries leads to different amounts of side products, therefore one could determine the stoichiometry by looking at the amount of side products. I used XRD scans on lab scale samples with known stoichiometries and then plotted a calibration curve that could be used to calculate the stoichiometry of unknown samples from full-scale production. -

Thesis StudentLkab Aug 2011 - Sep 2012LuleåThe project was based around quality control of their iron ore pellets. By examining them in a light microscope it was determined how and why they had cracked. Samples from LKAB's experimental blast furnace were taken from the top and bottom level. They were then cut in half and sealed in epoxy prior to the investigation with a light microscope. The conditions of these two different levels were taken into account regarding e.g. temperature and pressure. These conditions lead to different kinds of cracks, depending on which level the pellet originated from. -
