I learnt journalism the hard way. Equipped with a camera and note pad I was sent on assignments in my old and not very reliable Volvo 242. I worked for a weekly magazine covering rural affairs in my home county. I covered everything from Christmas fairs to ploughing competitions. My editor edited my stories ruthlessly but fairly. Even though many of the technologies we used has long been made redundant through advances in technology the basics of journalism stay the same. Some of the things I learnt I still apply in my work today:- How to find an interesting angle in every assignment- How to work independently and how to be self-motivated- How meet deadlines even when your editor rejects the lion part of your work just hours before the deadline- Photography and how to combine text and images to a compelling read- How all people have something interesting to say if you take the time to listen.
