Erik ten Winkel was born in Alkmaar (NL) on 10 September 1954.After completing his secondary education he went to the University of Amsterdam (NL) in 1974 where he studied Biology. He graduated in 1982. He was a post doc researcher at the US Fish and Wildlife Service Great Lakes Science Center in Ann Arbor (USA).In 1987 he obtained a cum laude doctorate in Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the same university with a thesis on food web relations in a fresh water lake.During his study from 1976 to 1982 he was intensively involved in lab and field training programs for students at the Aquatic Ecology unit and the Botany unit at the University of Amsterdam.In 1986 he started to work as a freelance IT consultant. Later that year he co-founded a company for aquatic environmental research and consultancy, AquaSense, which was sold in 2000.During this period he founded and co-founded several IT companies that subsequently were sold.In 2000 he started to work for a large stock market listed engineering company, first as a branch office director, later as Chief Technology Officer for the EMEA operations.Entrepreneurship is in Erik’s blood. He is a visionary and a fast strategic thinker with good analytical and problem solving skills, making ideas work in bio, agro and information technology areas. He reached outstanding results in attracting investments and subsidies for innovative ideas as well as more mainstream projects.He has proven expertise in managing multi-million euro budgets and contracts, managing professional staff, creating innovative plans, executing standardisation and consolidation projects, gaining substantial reduction of operational cost.He has good communication skills, is fluently in Dutch and English and is a leader of teams, a coach or mentor with interpersonal skills in a multi-cultural environment. Skilled in reorganising and building organisations and teams when needed and is familiar with managing organisational changes.
