Alt Reading is a non-profit online magazine that aims to support local independent businesses, events, and arts & culture in Reading. Apart from helping to conceptualise and maintain the website itself, my tasks consist of editing and writing content, promoting content via social media, meeting with business owners and potential new members of our team, helping to determine our future direction and the design of promotional materials, creating a directory for local businesses, and to help manage our finances and overall business back-end.

As an internal volunteer working in the office, I am involved in two longer term core projects. The first involves doing research for and helping to rewrite and digitalise the induction training manuals for internal volunteers. This includes doing qualitative research and gathering feedback via focus testing to make improvements. Part of my work is to apply gamification principles to the induction process by designing game-like challenges and quizzes so that the candidates are stimulated to be active and self-directed in their training/induction. The second project, and currently my main task, is to help with the development of an upcoming youth volunteering scheme (There4Reading) that will target young volunteers and that will aim to improve their employability skills via time bound volunteering projects at participating organisations and charities. My task is to assist with grant applications, give overall support, and to do research and create a conceptual framework and timeline. In the near future my tasks will also include helping with the development of an online diary system / portal and with providing general assistance to the volunteers and their supervisors.

As an independent cultural and literary researcher and philosopher, I am capable to do research within a large domain. I can analyze existing scientific discourses and can then extract the various perspectives from them in order to pinpoint possible problems and to formulate my own point of view via words and text. My main topics of interest are visual and interactive media (such as games, films, apps and websites), place and space (and the way humans interact with them), and the social media or (virtual) communities that form around these visual and interactive media or places. Where possible, I also like to give feedback on the research of others and try to assist those that need a bit of support.

I am able to write informative and easy to read texts in the following categories: advertisements, brochures, leaflets, product descriptions, magazines, websites, reports, evaluations and manuals. Finally, I can also translate texts from English to Dutch and vice versa, and I find much joy when able to give input on or brainstorm about new ideas, products, concepts etc.
