As a Lead Operations Research Scientist, I develop optimizers for customers in a wide variety of industries. My responsibilities are as follows:- Implementing optimizers using CPLEX, path optimization algorithms, local search, and heuristics- Designing optimizers based on customer requirements and translating these requirements into optimization solutions- Discussing and defining KPIs and constraints together with the customer and our consultant teams- Reviewing code and analyzing performance bottlenecks- Working together with R&D to improve our core software- Mentoring and onboarding colleagues - Solving the world's planning puzzles!

When I started working as an Operation Research Scientist at Quintiq, I got assigned to a long-running project in an awful state. During this project, I made many novel contributions. With these contributions, we managed to turn the project into a success!Because of my significant input to this long-running project, I got responsible for leading the optimizer development for the next phase of this project. I greatly enjoyed the increased responsibilities, which I used to keep the project on the right path. The project ended with a happy customer and was well on time and within budget. This success allowed me to grow quickly to the role of a Lead Operation Research Scientist.One of the fundamental insights that I discovered during my projects, is that both the customer requirements and the current optimizer design should never be considered immutable concepts. My most important contributions to a project were the moments where I pointed out inconsistencies in the requirements or where I enhanced the overall optimizer design.

During this internship I have combined deep learning with local search to solve combinatorial optimization problems, like the Travelling Salesman Problem. When solving these problems the research skills that I have obtained during my research master are very useful, because there has been little research into applying deep learning to combinatorial problems. My research has lead to a new neural network that efficiently solves combinatorial optimization problems.

My primary task at this job is being the developer of an optimization algorithm in R that optimizes the allocation of a marketing budget to maximize expected sales. In the project I cooperated with business development and management when validating parts of the code and when discussing strategies for the project.I was also tasked with finding and building a proper user interface to the optimization algorithm. I proposed to use the package Shiny, which combines the programming power of R with the web capabilities of HTML. This proposal got accepted and is now an integral part of the project.
