Research with Dr. Palangpon Kongsaeree (Chemistry; Mahidol University)The 2008 milk scandal brought to light how melamine has been used to fool quality control tests on milk going to market so it may sell at higher profit. Even worse: Melamine later precipitates in the kidneys causing renal failure in children and the elderly. We developed a rapid blue-to-red indicator for milk to detect melamine which was suitable for visual inspection out in the field. This platform was based on 13nm gold nanoparticles which act as incredibly bright dyes even at the lowest concentrations - this enables high sensitivity with lower cost-per-test as a result of leveraging the unique quantum physics of nanoscale materials.

Research with Dr. E. Bryan Coughlin (Polymer Science and Engineering; UMass)Alkaline fuel cells are capable of generating power with cheap, abundant methanol rather than hydrogen gas. You can use nickel catalysts instead of platinum (think of a catalytic converter) and build larger units at less cost. The drawback? Your device contains caustic lye which attacks the polymeric components inside. We investigated how modifications to the composition of the membrane inside the alkaline fuel cell can enhance its survivability and how these changes alter the film's performance.
