As a STEM ambassador I helped to inspire children to take an interest in the STEM subjects and even to consider these subjects as an option both in school and in later life. As my degree is in the field of Biology this is the main focus of any workshops however I also have Higher grades in both Physics and Maths and an Advanced Higher grade in Chemistry meaning I am able to give insight into these subjects also. I have been involved in STEM projects locally in both primary and high schools and plan to continue as a STEM Ambassador in the future. The activities I arranged for the classes were all my own work and I prepared these presentations myself.

I undertook a summer placement at the Bacteriology and PCR departments of Glasgow Scientific Services a UKAS accredited public analyst laboratory (working within Glasgow City Council). The lab does scientific, analytical and consultancy work for local authorities, private businesses and government agencies.Initially I shadowed workers in the lab, by the end of the placement I could be left to test water and food samples unsupervised in the Bacterioloy lab - including water samples from Strathclyde Loch to ensure the water was safe for use in the Glasgow 2018 European Championships. On occasion I was required to set up the 'sampling' lab myself.Key Roles/Responsibilities: - Testing water and food samples using various selective media - Using an autoclave - Preparing media (broth and agar) - Re-culturing colonies onto selective agar - Bacterial identification - DNA extraction - PCR/Gel electrophoresis - Sterile technique
