Erin J. Campbell is a behavioural neuroscientist based in Newcastle, Australia.Her research is focused on deconstructing the brain circuits of reward-seeking in safe and risky environments. Understanding how we adapt our behaviour in different environments (risky versus safe) is fundamental to understanding human behaviour. For example, overly conservative behaviour in safe environments can contribute to maladaptive cognitive states such as anxiety. On the other hand, inappropriate assessment of risk can lead to dangerous and negligent behaviour. Erin and her team hope to identify novel brain areas and circuits that future clinical studies can target in a number of neuropsychiatric disease states.

I am a behavioural neuroscientist based in Melbourne, Australia. My research is focused on understanding how neuropsychiatric disease states change the brain's chemistry, structure and function. I am currently examining the neural circuitry underlying relapse to alcohol-seeking following voluntary abstinence. My long-term goal is to identify novel brain circuits that future clinical studies can target in treatment-seeking individuals with alcohol use disorder. I started as a postdoctoral research officer at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health in 2016. During this time my research focused on examining the neural mechanisms underlying context-induced relapse to alcohol seeking after punishment-imposed abstinence with Andrew Lawrence and Nathan Marchant.

I completed my PhD (Anatomy) at the University of Newcastle under the supervision of Christopher Dayas, Deborah Hodgson and Rohan Walker. During this time I examined the impact of early life stress on the lateral hypothalamic orexin (hypocretin) system using behavioural, immunohistochemical and designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADD) techniques. I received a Jennie Thomas and Hunter Medical Research Institute Travel Grant in 2015 to travel to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and work with Yavin Shaham and Nathan Marchant. During this time I examined the role of the ventral subiculum in context-induced relapse to alcohol seeking after punishment-imposed abstinence using DREADD technology.
