I was recently on a women's panel and was asked about what it's like to work in such a male dominated industry. The best way I could explain my experience was through a funny story: Most of my trade execution is done over a chat system or over the phone. When I first started, I was given a chat account with a screen name. My screen name is EDOHSE (my first initial followed by my last name), and this is what appears when I am making markets and trading with brokers. On multiple occasions in the beginning of my career, a broker I had never worked with before would call up to the desk to discuss a trade, and they would ask to speak with "Ed." At first no one on my desk could understand who "Ed" was. The broker would get flustered, and then specify that he was looking to speak to the guy trading SPX options: "Ed Ohse." This industry is so male dominated that everyone just assumes there is a man on the other side of the trade. Nearly 20 years later, Ed is still a nickname that I respond to; that along with sir, dude, bro, and on formal occasions I go by Mr. Ohse. I have been at Chicago Trading Company for 18 years. The majority of my career has been spent trading and risk managing in our Index Options groups. Some highlights include: trading on the CBOE floor as the DPM of the SPY pit, 10+ years of experience trading S&P options, managing our S&P delta portfolio, heading our FX options desk, and currently I am trading and risk managing in our Nasdaq and Russell groups. I am also really excited to be a part of CTC's DEI initiatives as the co-head of our Women's ERG (Employee Resource Group).
