Courses Taught:Introduction to Media Studies (Com 201)Introduction to Media Studies introduces students to the various fields in mass media including books, newspapers, magazines, movies, radio, television, Internet, journalism, public relations, the music industry, and advertising. Interviewing Practices and Principles (Com 325)This class emphasizes the principles and practical applications of the journalistic, employment, and survey interviews.Media and Culture (Com 236)This course explores how media messages shape cultural values as well as how media marginalizes cultural groups. Fundamentals of Communication (Com 114)This hybrid class focuses on interpersonal communication, group communication, and public speaking through lectures, group discussions, written exams, and speech evaluations.Written and Oral Communication for Engineers (Com 307)Emphasis is placed upon research, organizing, and presenting materials in oral technical presentations, ensuring that technical information is presented in an interesting and understandable manner.

Trained, supervised, and mentored Communication department graduate teacher assistants; lead and organized Communication Department’s Curriculum Development and Test Writing Committee; collected and compiled basic course assessment data for PNW’s administration.

Courses Taught:Communication Ethics (COMS 4850) Communication Ethics involves discussion of ethical theory, professional ethical codes, with a particular emphasis on ethical issues and challenges that occur in the area of Media Communications. Nonverbal Communication (COMS 4135/6135) Students examine nonverbal elements of human communication, consider body movement, space behavior, time orientation and management, and aesthetic and environmental factors. Students analyze interpersonal communication settings in terms of their nonverbal function, value, and meaning.
Public Address and Interpretation (COMS 3160)Students are introduced to basic principles of public address and rhetorical analysis.

Fundamentals of Public Speaking (COM 101)Introduces fundamental concepts and skills for effective public speaking, including audience analysis, outlining, research, delivery, critical listening and evaluation, presentational aids, and use of appropriate technology.Interpersonal Communication (COM 102)Provides theory, actual practice, and criticism for examining and changing human interactions in work, family, and social contexts. Includes topics such as perception, self-concept language, message encoding and decoding, feedback, listening skills, conflict management, and other elements affecting interpersonal communication.

Conducted research and wrote speeches for the textbook, Communication: Embracing Differences by Daniel M. Dunn and Lisa J. Goodnight. 2003.Wrote companion piece, Communication: Embracing Differences Test Bank, Allyn Bacon Publishing. 2003.

Wrote two books focusing on ethnic holiday traditions: "A Season of Celebrating" and "Traditions".

Project managed temporary exhibits for the Museum (Christmas Around the World, Holidays of Lights, ¡Volando! Latin American Aviation, and Sport), which included leading a project team of5-23 members; monitored project budgets of $100k-$310k; worked with design staff to plan and approve layouts of exhibit space; worked with public relations and marketing on developing press materials; acted as Museum spokesperson for news media during various exhibit openings. Researched and developed multicultural Holidays of Light exhibit, increasing cultural awareness to Museum guests.

Developed and Implemented internal and external programming and community outreach including: the Museum’s first recycling program; developed and facilitated two department management retreats; assisted in guest relations projects for Museum’s pay admission system; developed and implemented staff training on exhibits such as Christmas Around the World, Robots and Beyond: The Age of Intelligent Machines, Frank Lloyd Wright: Ideas and Treasures, Bionics: The World of Replacement Medicine. Served on Christmas Around the World team by auditioning and scheduling over 200 choral performances. Scheduled cultural performances and holiday related public events.
