Support improvement of Indonesia's REDD+ Forest Reference Emission Level by updating existing peatland emission factors through literature review and process based modeling.

Design and implement forest and wetland carbon projects, from initial feasibility study to carbon inventory and monitoring, liaising between project developers and auditors to achieve project validation and monitoring verification.

Ms. Swails led the technical design of various projects centered on climate change mitigation in the agriculture, forestry, and other land use (AFOLU) sector and assisted in the development of measurement and monitoring systems for national scale programs aimed at reducing emissions from forests (REDD+). She was involved in projects focusing on afforestation/reforestation (A/R) as well as avoided deforestation and avoided peat emissions projects. Ms. Swails led the development of the second A/R project to be registered under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). She co-authored an avoided peat emissions methodology approved under the VCS.Ms. Swails played a critical role in the management and implementation of the AFOLU Climate Change Mitigation Technical Assistance Program for the Ecosystem Services Unit. She assisted in the creation and presentation of carbon project design training modules and carbon stock measurement calculation tools to build international capacity in measurement and monitoring of emissions for carbon project development. She implemented forest carbon inventories in the US as well as Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Ms. Swails managed reforestation projects in eight indigenous communities, providing technical training to community members which resulted in plantations totaling 16,000 trees. With a grant from the Peace Corps Partnership Program she designed, implemented, and managed a greenhouse construction project with a women’s community cooperative in the Municipality of Sacaca. She also coordinated a school tree planting project between the municipal government and the organization Project Concern International to implement environmental education activities with 820 rural students and their teachers.
