Under Pilcrow Group, Laura Poole and I ran the popular Copyediting, a publications and training brand for editors. We published a grammar workbook, a bimonthly premium newsletter, a weekly email newsletter, and a daily blog. We also offer monthly training webinars, in-depth online courses, and on-site public and private training. In 2018, we sold the Copyediting brand to ACES: The Society for Editing.

I taught Copyediting II, Copyediting III, and Social Media for Editors in UCSD Extension School's well-respected copyediting certificate program. All courses involved developing courses and lessons, recording lectures, creating and grading exercises and tests, leading and moderating forums, and counseling students regarding coursework.Copyediting II is a 10-week course that teaches students to perform a medium copyedit, write professional-level queries within a manuscript, and use resources like "The Chicago Manual of Style" in their work. Students also learn more about style sheets, electronic editing, CMoS, editorial best practices, web editing, and more.Copyediting III is a 10-week course that teaches students to perform a heavy copyedit, write professional-level queries within a manuscript and cover letters, and use resources like "Garner's Modern English Usage" in their work. Students also learn about documentation, permissions, and other book-publishing topics; different genres; and common legal considerations related to editing and publishing.Social Media for Editors was a 6-week course taught exclusively by me. It taught students about the hub-and-spoke model of an online presence and how to create and launch a social media plan for their freelance editing businesses.

As editor-in-chief of the Copyediting brand, I was the public face of the brand. I managed, edited, and wrote for the premium "Copyediting" newsletter, shepherding the newsletter to a deeper focus on freelancing and self-training as copyeditors shifted out of employment roles. I also managed the launch of "Copyediting" blog, growing the audience into the thousands and the posts from 1 to 15 posts a week. I also wrote the anchor post, Tip of the Week, each week. Until 2012, I led the online training program, when we hired a training manager for those duties. And I represented the brand at professional events and online.

Initially part of a team of copyeditors, I became the sole copyeditor after 9/11 for the rest of my tenure. I copyedited, fact-checked, and coded columns and news items for the ClickZ website, as well as for our marketing materials. I managed the ClickZ Awards, as well as the ClickZ style guide and our our freelance writers. I responded to reader email, wrote and distributed the writer newsletter, and assisted the Executive Editor with day-to-day site operations.
