Managed project to support FDA approval of a Class 3 medical device for blood safety. Senior Engineer: Feb 2012-August 2014Lead Engineer: Oct 2005- Feb 2012Member of the Life Sciences and Molecular Diagnostics organization of GE Global Research. Focused on research and development projects related to diagnostic sample collection, sample preparation, DNA amplification and automation. Roles have included staff engineer, project manager, and mentor to new project managers. Specific accomplishments include: • Awarded a DARPA grant for the development of a point-of-care diagnostic system to analyze DNA, RNA, and protein targets in self-collected biological samples. Led interdisciplinary team (>20 members plus a small business collaborator) to achieve Phase 1 goals on time and within budget.• Awarded a NIJ (National Institute of Justice) grant for the development of an automated system to process FTA card samples (buccal swabs and dried blood spots) for DNA fingerprint analysis. Achieved prototype on time and on budget. Transitioned technology to an internally funded program and led the technical team supporting system commercialization.• Led a program to develop a microfluidic system to analyze proteins. Key team member in the design and testing of the sample preparation protocol.• Key member on several teams that designed and tested consumables to enable reproducible self-collection of diagnostic samples.

Thesis title "Analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid proteome in Alzheimer’s disease: potential biomarkers for differential diagnosis and the effects of intravenous immunoglobulin therapy". Specific accomplishments include:• Developed optimized sample preparation methods (protease digestion) for protein mass spectrometry.• Identified a set of protein biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid, to differentiate between Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, protein mass spectrometry, and multivariate statistical methods.• Identified proteomic changes in patients with Alzheimer's and patients undergoing therapy.• Mentored and directed research of undergraduate research students.
