About Erin Huiting
Dr. Erin Huiting is a scientist with expertise in the fields of microbiology, immunology, and genetics alongside growing interests in plant biology and pathology. She is currently a Schmidt Science Fellow at the University of California, Davis within Dr. Pam Ronald’s lab and the Department of Plant Pathology. Erin research will focus on understanding how plants evolve resistance against pathogens - like bacteria, fungi, and viruses - that cause severe disease in crops. This research will serve as the basis to bioengineer multi-pathogen resistant crops and further build upon sustainable agriculture practices.Erin’s completed her Biomedical Sciences PhD at the University of California, San Francisco in the lab of Dr. Joe Bondy-Denomy. Here, she investigated how new bacterial ‘immune systems’ work and co-evolve with bacteriophage (phage) and discovered a viral 'sponge' protein that sequesters many unique immune signals, including cGAMP, that functions in immune systems across all domains of life. This work was recognized with the Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award, alongside the UCSF Discovery and Fletcher Jones Fellowships for excellence in research, and has led to 6-peer reviewed publications.Erin’s long-term goal is to bridge fundamental biology and genome engineering tools to make positive, real-world impacts to our planet’s health.
Listed skills include Community Outreach, Critical Thinking, Powerpoint, Team Leadership, and 6 others.
