Finding a new gear. When used in the context of the run, its meaning is simple. Focus, dig deep, go harder and find the strength to push through and reach your goal. Eight and a half years ago I was brought on to help Brooks communications find its next gear. A hot brand in the quickly growing running category, my charter was simple; create and execute a communications vision that helped push Brooks to the next level. Blessed with the flexibility to test and learn and the entrepreneurial spirit of the leadership team, I had many amazing experiences growing Brooks global function. Along the way I developed a highly successful consumer and corporate PR program that yielded coverage across all major consumer and business print and broadcast outlets, launched the Brooks Heritage business, and architected the beginnings of a truly global communications team with my partners abroad. I started at Brooks as a PR manager, and my position and responsibility grew over time and to fit the needs of the business. Upon my departure, my oversight included internal and external communications, global social media (organic), and influencer marketing. Creating a a coordinated global narrative coupled with moments in time for employees and runners to celebrate the sport was at the center of what my team did. We brought the pieces together to celebrate wins, champion the sport and all athletes and ensure employees were engaged and enjoying the journey.

Six months after starting and working on casual games at Xbox, I was named Kinect PR lead and joined a small, cross-organizational project team. It was our job to drive marketing strategy for a product so secret most did not know of its existence, and those of us “in the know” weren’t sure if the technology still in incubation would work as envisioned.As product lead, I helped to develop and was responsible for driving the global communications plan for the Kinect platform, hardware and games. On the hook for for global strategy and US execution, I worked with a large agency team in the states and all of my global counterparts to bring the plan to life in the US, EMEA and Japan. I also acted as a spokesperson for print and broadcast media outlets across the globe.The methodical 24-month plan with deliberate news cadence, drove the product’s roll out across the world and at launch, Kinect was a technology and games industry superstar and pop culture icon. Celebrity love, appearances on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” “Ellen”, and “Live with Regis and Kelly!” along with gracing the cover of Wired UK, a full page placement in PARADE and a mention in the Sunday Comics are just a few of the many highlights. Kinect was also named in 2010 the fastest-selling consumer-electronics product based on its first 60 days sales by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Hitting the road or taking to the skies can be both exciting and intimidating for many people, made harder by the sheer amount of online travel agencies and do-it-yourself sites out there. As consumer PR lead at Expedia, I was tasked with building programming that would help differentiate the brand from competitors and position it as a travel partner and resource for trends and inspiration. Creativity was key, and the combination of data and those oh-so-common travel mishaps and sticky situations familiar to us all, drove the key programming for the brand. In one example of this, I worked with a seasoned travel industry veteran to leverage Expedia travel data and develop the Expedia Travel Trendwatch. Released quarterly, the Tredwatch reported on the major trends for the upcoming quarter, travel tips and highlighted destinations. The oft-quoted publication was distributed to press and linked to on the home page of Expedia.com. The report was brought to life for consumers each quarter by a SMT at one of the highlighted destinations. Buoyed by frequent media use and placement on the home page, we were able to drive approximately 25% more readers and users each quarter over quarter and became a model used by our top EMEA subsidiaries.In addition to driving consumer programming, I was a travel expert and brand spokesperson for print and broadcast media nationally. I appeared on television in major media markets including Seattle, San Francisco, Sacramento and Miami, sharing travel trends and tips.
