Worked within an 80-bed residential substance abuse program at Virginia Correctional Center for Women. Conducted comprehensive assessments, and individual treatment plans for a caseload of roughly 30-80 clients with co-occurring disorders. Worked in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team for case planning, and behavioral intervention. Facilitated psycho-education groups on a weekly basis as defined by curriculum (Criminal Conduct and Substance Abuse, Helping Women Recover, and Beyond Trauma) with key emphasis towards discussions about recovery, trauma, and gender-responsive treatment. Monitored the therapeutic environment and assured client compliance with all programmatic and department policies and regulations. Communicated with outside agency representatives such as probation offices and court officials. Taught daily life skills, problem solving strategies, and interpersonal relationship skills to groups and individuals. Deescalated crises ensuring the safety of clients and other professionals.

Worked with patients in the hospital on a short-term basis to help them process new diagnoses, substance abuse issues, grief, depression, etc. Met with a cardiac rehab patient on a weekly basis for stress management. Co-lead a stress management group for the pulmonary rehab patients. Observed and worked in the emergency room with patients in crisis such as suicidal thoughts, suicidal attempts, and substance abuse issues. Documented patient interactions using SOAP note format, and provided patients with outpatient resources when appropriate.

Shadowing a psychologist twice a week in an acute care ward of the psychiatric hospital. Observe rounds, and team meetings with patients. Preparing observation notes for supervisor. Learning about different forensic processes, and aiding in tutoring patients for the competency evaluation.

Part of research team under Dr. Kit Chan. Focus on psycholinguistics, and student comprehension of phrases when presented a speaker with a foreign accent versus native accents. Proctored the experiment trials. Met with the instructor once a week to discuss progress and how to improve the experiment.

Met with at-risk child twice a week at his/her home, worked on skills such as organization and various subjects he/she needed help in. Kept logs of tutoring sessions and observations of the child and the family life in the home.

Monitored computer labs and enforced the computer lab policies. Helped students when computers or printers had errors.

Part of research team under Dr. Rich West. Studied the relationship between rationality and intelligence. Treated intelligence and rationality as separate categories, and worked on a pilot study developing a rationality test similar to the SATs for intelligence. Proctored the test twice a week in two-hour sessions, and attended two and half hour discussion meetings once a week. Read and discussed relevant literature with our instructor.
