While I continue to support institutions in the Bay Area, I look forward to helping organizations in our new community, the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, to shine as well.www.primechuckcreative.com

Mar 2011 - Present

Publicist, "Let'S Pollute"

Happy-Go-Dismal Productions

Oakland

The producers of Let's Pollute, a satirical independent animated short with a shoestring budget and green message, needed help with publicity when they received a surprise Academy Award nomination in 2011. I helped quickly create marcom materials (website, social media, Wikipedia, IMDB), developed a media release, set up Bay Area and LA media interviews, and worked with a PR agent to place the story nationally at a friends and family rate. The film may not have taken Oscar home, but with coverage in outlets such as USA Today, Huffington Post, and Paste, the film, its director, and its message received widespread favorable attention.

Jan 2011 - Mar 2011

Northern California Editor

I covered Northern California for the Solar HBJ, an independent online source for news and information on solar electricity and electric vehicles. I reported on technology, policy, and business developments, interviewed industry movers, captured photographs and other visuals, and reviewed vehicles (test-drove the Tesla Roadster!). Sadly, the Solar HBJ ceased publication in March 2011.One thing I’ll deeply miss about the site is the opportunity to really, and I mean really, explore the issues. I find the typical media's surface coverage quite frustrating—so many obvious questions are left unanswered. The Solar HBJ's crack editor, Pulitzer Prize winner Mike Balchunas, did not artificially cap the news at 200 or 500 words (a number of my features topped the 3000 mark). Thank you, Mike.I look forward to more opportunities to get my hands dirty with clean technology and renewable energy. Who knew I'd love all this tech and policy stuff?See "Publications," below, for clips.

Nov 2009 - Mar 2011

Editor, Writer, Project Manager

Erin M. Milnes Editorial Services

San Francisco

I was involved in every phase of book publishing, from acquisition & development to editorial & production to marketing & distribution. The editorial hat fit me best, though I was very happy in marketing and acquisitions as well. Though I no longer work in publishing, I continue to think of myself as a reader's advocate—every time I write a blog post or develop a brand name.Because of my solid, long-term relationships with several clients, I had the good fortune to be able to step in and out of freelance work while I held other positions (as you can see from my concurrent titles).Clients included University of Chicago Press, Microsoft Press, Osborne McGraw-Hill, Key Curriculum Press, Stanford University Press, Pearson, Ortho Books. One lovely aspect of book publishing is that you can publicly acknowledge those who've helped you with your project. I've benefitted many times from such graciousness.“And higher praise I cannot bestow: Erin Milnes has restored my faith in copy editors.” (Acknowledgments, Microsoft Office for Macintosh v. X Inside Out, Tom Negrino, Microsoft Press, 2002, winner of the 2002 BookBytes award for Best Office Application Book) “I was especially fortunate to have Erin Milnes as my copy editor; she not only caught inconsistencies in style and content, but her suggestions for amplification and revision went much beyond my expectations for good copy editing.” (Acknowledgments, Forensic Psychology, Lawrence Wrightsman, Wadsworth Publishing, 2000)“She is wonderfully thorough and conscientious—one of the finest editors I’ve had the pleasure of encountering.” (Pamela MacFarland Holway, Managing Editor, Stanford University Press, 1998)

1993 - 2011 ~18 yrs

Communications Director, Producer, Business Manager

Sillywood, Tvmoto, Digital Zoo, Fortitude Editorial

San Francisco Bay Area

These four sister companies together provide comprehensive production and post services and editorial equipment, with offices in Northern and Southern California. Sillywood specializes in commercials and animation. TVMoto produces motorsports video and television. Digital Zoo offers international post equipment sales and rental. Fortitude Editorial was a full-service post house in LA.I wrote and edited scripts and treatments; handled all internal, external, and B2B communications; wrote contracts; developed television time buy proposals (including research on advertising costs and revenues, projected ratings, demographics, and network interest), and was part of the leadership team that created the business plans, marketing and distribution strategies, and project pitches. I produced a number of videos (details in the Projects section, below), which involved all prepro research and planning (budget, schedule, equipment, locations, personnel, insurance, payroll), field and studio production management, and postproduction oversight including asset trafficking and management.

2003 - 2008 ~5 yrs

Rafting Guide

Cal Adventures

Why not? I love the water and a friend was guiding for Cal Adventures (the rec group out of UC Berkeley), so I took the plunge. Did the training up at Lotus (I was the oldest student there) and guided the South Fork of the American River for a summer. Class III+. I would have happily kept it up, but CA decided to drop its rafting program (bad decision). I sure miss it. If you ever need a paddler or want to sell your boat, let me know.

May 2000 - Aug 2000

Senior Editor

San Francisco

At West I helped a team of attorney editors write in English. I also developed and gently enforced project schedules, trained copyeditors, produced forms and newsletters, trafficked publishing assets, and coordinated multi-team projects. I quickly learned the software, languages, and systems the company used including SGML, XML, and West's own Westlaw.

1998 - 1999 ~1 yr

Assistant To The Deputy Executive Director For Programs

Chicago

I had the pleasure of supporting the very smart and capable national DED for Programs out of AI's Midwest Office (in Chicago's lovely Monadnock Building). I handled the usual support tasks: correspondence, logistics, travel planning, scheduling, errands, telephone, filing, company paperwork. I also helped plan and coordinate the Annual General Meeting (AIUSA's 3-day national conference), which was held in Chicago that year.

1994 - 1995 ~1 yr

Managing Editor

Chicago

I shepherded the trade division of this Jesuit publisher from "pop and pop" shop to competitive publishing business. Based on research of industry best practices, I overhauled and modernized the scheduling and tracking system. During my tenure we published 10 to 18 titles per year on time and on budget.I was involved in every aspect of acquisitions, editorial, production, and marketing, from author contact (and handholding) to manuscript development to catalog copy and jacket design. I managed the editorial staff of three, coordinated meetings of the editorial, production, and marketing departments, and hired freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, typesetters, and designers.

Sep 1990 - Aug 1993

Associate Editor

I started at Loyola as Associate Editor, with copyediting, proofreading, project management, and author contact responsibilities.
