I am an Assistant Professor of International Law at Essex Law School, where my work focuses on how international law interacts with foreign and security policy. My research addresses issues such as the use of force, space security, climate change, and the challenges posed by emerging technologies, with an emphasis on how legal frameworks shape and respond to global security threats.My monograph, Prohibited Force: The Meaning of ‘Use of Force’ in International Law (Cambridge University Press, 2024), explores the scope and meaning of the prohibition on the use of force, and its application to new and emerging security threats. I serve as co-Rapporteur of the International Law Association’s Committee on the Use of Force: Military Assistance on Request and as a Convener of the European Society of International Law’s Interest Group on Peace and Security. I also peer-review for leading journals, including the American Journal of International Law (AJIL) and the European Journal of International Law (EJIL).In addition to academic roles, I hold the British Academy Global Innovation Fellowship at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) in Berlin, where I engage with policymakers on the legal dimensions of foreign and security challenges. I am also a Senior Research Affiliate at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg and a non-resident fellow at the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) in Geneva, contributing to their Space Security Programme.My experiences with the International Criminal Court, the United Nations, and legal practice as a solicitor in Australia have shaped my approach to addressing global security challenges through both academic research and policy engagement.
