About Erin Rachael Hoffman
Hello! I'm a data scientist with a background in computer science and design research. You can find my work in academic publications (including a 2017 ACM journal article and 2024 IEEE article), tutorials published by the Analytics Vidhya publication on Medium, and — most recently — in the open-source scikit-learn library. I thrive in interdisciplinary spaces where I can apply my skills in software development, writing, and research.Software development: I have been programming since 2009, and my first professional programming role was for Crowe in 2012, where I built HIPAA-compliant web apps using ASP.Net. My most fluent programming language is Python, although I have a strong enough foundation in full-stack development that I have previously worked on Android apps (in a research context as well as a Facebook internship) and taught full-stack web development using Ruby on Rails and React. Most recently I have been getting into open source contributions, including the 0.24 release of scikit-learn, the most popular ML library in use today.Writing: While I did receive a "book award" from the English department in high school, my primary writing focus is technical writing. I learned some of this formally in graduate school, and my current role as a curriculum manager involves creating technical content every day. I also write in my spare time on Medium.com and Udacity's blog site.Research: My path here has been somewhat non-traditional. I enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Washington in 2015, but my progress is on pause at the moment. In the coursework there — as well as supplemental Instructional Design courses I have taken at the University of Illinois — I learned skills that have proven useful outside of an academic research context. In particular, the human-centered design framework has helped me to gather data using mixed methods techniques, synthesize it, and produce design ideas and solutions. The current context I'm applying this framework is the data science curriculum at Udacity, where I am constantly collecting information about industry trends, employer needs, and alumni feedback in order to iteratively improve our curriculum.I am not currently seeking a new position, but I would be happy to provide pro bono data science consulting for small projects, especially nonprofits. For example, I previously collaborated with an organization in the UK to help dig into survey data relating to gender minorities. I'm also interested in coauthoring papers in the ACM or IEEE communities.
Listed skills include Python, Java, C++, Html, and 26 others.

In my capacity as a software engineering coach, my primary responsibility was answering student questions about their lab and project work. I also delivered lectures, provided feedback, organized events, and made contributions to the curriculum (which is shared across ten campuses from Denver to London). I worked on a three-member instructional team for my cohort of twenty students, within a larger campus of five concurrent staggered cohorts (i.e. 15 instructors and 100 students overall). I'm excited to be a part of Flatiron School's reimagining of computer science education!
Computer Science Teacher
Lakeside School is a private college prep school that offers summer school classes for students who want to get ahead or create space in their schedules for additional electives. I taught the summer course in Computer Science I, the equivalent of a 1-semester high school class taught in Python.I designed, taught, and graded all course materials for 18 students ranging in grade level from rising freshmen to rising seniors. I also included feedback mechanisms so I could rapidly adapt to student needs over the considerably condensed summer time frame. As someone with an affinity for hackathons, I held a four-hour in-class "hackathon" for students to work on their final projects.
