I am a senior at Olivet College looking for ways to further my knowledge outside of the classroom. As an actuarial science major, I am easily excited by anything that is related to numbers. I have always excelled in the math and business types of courses and enjoy them as well. I was given the opportunity to start working in the ITS department at Hillsdale College while I was still in high school. Since then I have continued to work there during the summers and breaks. With my experience working in this department, I have learned the ins and outs of computers, phones, networking, etc. so I decided to declare as a computer science minor along with the actuarial science major. I am now familiar with Python and I am learning C and C++ this semester. As my education at Olivet College continues I plan to learn more languages I can program in. While working through the courses needed for an actuarial science major and the honors program I have been able to take honors options in statistics and microeconomics. With research from the CDC, I used what I learned in statistics to study the weekly deaths in the United States from Influenza from 2015-2019. The next semester I did a more extensive project where I studied the unemployment rates according to race, ethnicity, and gender. These projects have given me a glimpse of what these courses can be used to accomplish in the future. I plan to continue to do similar projects during the rest of my education.
