During my time at Archer Bushby I was primarily employed in the firm’s litigation department, although I also had carriage of various commercial files. I had a varied case load including criminal and civil files for which I was the managing solicitor. My criminal files required me to take instructions from my clients, research the law, liaise with the Prosecuting authority, appear in Court to enter Pleas, and prepare briefs of evidence for hearings if necessary. My civil files required me to take instruction from clients, undertake a significant amount of research into the law, form legal opinions and provide advice as to legal rights & obligations. I was also required to liaise with other parties to the action, prepare pleadings and other documents to file with the relevant court or tribunal. I was often given work to do for my supervisors as well. Time management and the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines was an essential feature in my role.
