During the summer of 2016, I was given the opportunity to advise a wonderful NPO in Cape Town, South Africa. The client was delivered to us in collaboration with the Bertha Centre, Social Entrepreneurship Academy, University of Oslo and the Graduate School of Business. Our main objective was to clarify the financial situation, and provide recommendations for future operations.The client: B&D is part of a franchise consisting of 35 coffee shops in the Netherlands, B&D Cape Town was first of its’ kind in South Africa. The coffee shop educates people with mental challenges, and gives them a brighter futureBrownies & downieS Cape Town is a coffee shop and lunchroom that is opened under Our Second Home as a Non-Profit Organization to the public, tourists and businesses. First and foremost, however, it is a training centre for people with intellectual disabilities, and a vessel to create change and acceptance in the South African culture. Our Second Home’s first priority is to train special needs adults to be employable in the hospitality, service and retail sectors. Our long term goal is to also give special needs adults independence through self-sustaining and assisted living homes, in conjunction with training and work through Brownies & downieS cafés.

I was honored to be part of the Thome experience the summer of 2014 , receiving good insight in the shipping industry, and the challenges and opportunities it faces the coming years due to digitalization. I was introduced to the different activities that Ship Management include, everything from fleet portfolio, crew training, risk management, security, to inspections of the vsls and of the suppliers. I was also given responsibilities when having to help manage the brand new Siem Spearfish (Harkand). The management consisted of making sure that operations on the vsl could be fulfilled, this implying everything from crew and checking that they had the right certificates in order, to supplying the vsl with the necessary equipment. With accommodation of up to 110 and crew of over 20 people, it was a challenging, but an educational summer.Thome Group of Companies is a dynamic provider of integrated ship management services to the international shipping and offshore industries.
