My career has been dedicated to empowering rural communities to enhance their livelihoods and build sustainable relationships with one another and the environment. With an academic background in Biochemistry and Microbiology, driven by a fascination with life’s intricate systems, I unexpectedly found my path in pro-poor agricultural innovation—a challenging yet deeply fulfilling journey.I have worked exclusively in the non-profit sector, starting as a fieldworker for an agricultural NGO before advancing to project and organizational management. In 2003, I founded the Mahlathini Development Foundation, a small, specialized organization at the nexus of research, learning, and implementation. Our work spans agriculture and food systems, water and natural resource management, and local governance, focusing on sustainable solutions tailored to the unique needs of smallholder farmers. We emphasize synergies across activities—field cropping, livestock, horticulture, and land use management—scaling from household initiatives to larger catchment-level interventions, and addressing local, national, and international contexts.Currently, our primary focus is on community-level climate change adaptation and resilience, fostering transformative, restorative, and regenerative solutions. We explore practices, systems, and processes that address global challenges while anchoring our efforts in the lived realities of rural communities.Through this journey, I have developed expertise in systems analysis, problem-solving in complex environments, and bridging diverse perspectives—scientific, spiritual, and pragmatic. My ability to distill actionable strategies from complexity and foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders has been pivotal. However, I acknowledge my limitations in areas like statistical analysis, IT, HR compliance, and traditional marketing, relying on team support to complement my strengths. I prioritize meaningful connections and pragmatic solutions over rigid structures or political maneuvering.Outside work, my interests include hiking, gardening (especially food production and preservation), reading (from esoteric philosophy to fantasy fiction), crafts, classical music, and traveling. Life’s diversity and richness continually inspire me, shaping both my professional endeavors and personal passions.
