The projects at Gadget Review helped me perfect my analytical tools, challenging me to discover the target consumers for each product.For the electric scooter project, I wrote 1500-2000-word in-depth reviews about individual electric scooters. This project required mentioning in-depth specs and features of the scooters and it needed generous use of emotive verbs. For the keyboard project, I wrote 500-word reviews of specific computer keyboard models. Assignments ranged from articles for regular office keyboards to advanced gaming models and custom-built split options. Identifying the target audience for each keyboard was key. The blender project involved crafting 500-word reviews of individual blender models. I wrote about a variety of blenders, including basic portable smoothie blenders and professional-grade models meant for restaurants.I also reviewed TVs and headphones, writing articles about truly wireless earbuds, Bluetooth headphones and advanced gaming headsets. For most of the projects, I also worked on separate 500 to 1000-word buying guide-style category pages. I wrote product and category pages for banners, table runners, feather flags, branded tents and other materials. For this client, the focus was not just calling out the quality of the products, but also highlighting the ease of use of the client's DIY design website.Another project for a major US retailer for nutritional supplements and vitamins involved writing 150 to 250-word product pages. On this project, I perfected the art of marketing these health products without running afoul of the strict rules of the FDA.I also wrote 200-word product pages and 500-word category pages for a Fortune 500 IT equipment vendor. In addition to the usual assignments on computers, server equipment and accessories, I became quite the expert in writing about software and product warranties. Many people would find the prospect of dedicating an entire 250-word product description to an extended warranty intimidating. Not me! This client has a professional sys admin-type target audience, so the level of writing bordered on the technical. For a major Canadian retailer of MRO and hardware supplies, I wrote dozens of product descriptions and category pages. The project required blending the technical specs of the products with a refreshing tone to appeal to contractors, engineers and DIY enthusiasts. I learnt how to switch gears and brand voices at the snap of a wrist.While this was a freelance position, it was not unusual for me to put in 50-hour weeks. Helping advertisers to test was a major goal of the platform, and we would run multiple "rounds" for the same campaign to make the ads the best versions they could be. This sharpened by copywriting skills, helping me to identify the things that pique a consumer's interest. On a project for a major US industrial supply company, I learnt to write about MRO and hardware products in a technical but engaging way that appeals to engineers, contractors and DIY enthusiasts.Writing ads for luxury brands created a different challenge, as I would discover when working on a project for a luxury retailer of home and garden accessories. The tone of voice has to be spot on for each ad, and any hints about pricing had to be subtle.BoostMedia later launched AdLabs.ai, a semi-automated platform for testing and optimizing ads made in collaboration with Microsoft. Before the advent of AI proper, I got a feel of how to help AI generate effective marketing copy.Apart from the above clients, on any given day, I would write for insurance companies, music stores, eyeglass shops, ticket websites and convenience stores.
