As our product evolved within the CPSG group within Cisco - from Virtual Managed Services (VMS) to Managed Services Accelerator (MSX), we also added a line of business offering our core product 'as a service.' Both the evolution of the core product, as well as the 'as a service offering' required an increased focus on the security and compliance of our portfolio. Having prior experience working with security and compliance frameworks (DISA, NIST) within the federal government space (Department of Defense - Authority to Operate Certification), I was tapped by senior leadership to spearhead our efforts in both internal and external compliance. As such, I now lead a team of security professionals whose job it is to ensure that our product meets the highest levels of security and compliance, as well as increasing the cyber security and compliance levels for our 'as a service' offering. I work closely with the Cisco Security and Trust Office as well as the Cisco PSIRT team, to ensure that our product and service meet the demands of the modern cyber threat landscape, and that our customers can trust that our product is secure. In this role, I often perform the Product Management function - taking high-level security requirements and breaking them down into actionable features and tasks for the security engineering team (and product development teams) to deliver at each release. I also perform the function of the Product Owner, owning the end to end technical implementation process, to include final validation (technical demo) before each release. In this role, I led the platform engineering organization for the Virtual Managed Services (VMS) product, within the Cisco Cloud Platform & Solutions Group (CPSG). By way of strong leadership, from both a technical and organizational perspective, I re-organized the team into stronger functional groups, implemented a proven delivery cadence centered around a continuous integration and delivery pipeline, and doubled the team size over the course of a year. Overall code quality was improved by way of continuous testing and working closely with the other groups inside of VMS. The flexibility and stability of the product increased, as we adopted newer technologies like Kubernetes, running atop existing IaaS platforms - OpenStack and Amazon Web Services (AWS). In this role, I also oversaw the increase in focus on product security, working closely with Cisco's Security and Trust Office (STO), as well as Cisco's Product Security Incident Response (PSIRT) team. This led to a natural transition into a new role as head of security for Managed Services Accelerator (MSX) formerly Virtual Managed Services. Lastly, I worked closely with Product Management to take customer requests for new features and vague requirements and translate them into actionable requirements for my engineering team. Work with large enterprise customers to solve very difficult problems in the Cloud space. Cisco contractor via Mirantis.Assess application architectures to determine if the workload is a fit for Cloud. Help customers understand what a successful application architecture will look like on the target platform (OpenStack) as opposed to the source platform (VMware, Bare Metal, Hyper-V, etc.) Develop detailed application migration plans that include recommendations on refactoring or re-packaging applications for Cloud. Develop detailed distributed application architectures (including diagrams) for Cloud applications to achieve high availability, high performance, fault tolerance, resiliency and scale. Develop disaster recovery plans that work within the Cloud space and allow an application to survive a disaster. Work with customers to understand how to use Cloud methodologies and tools such as Compute + Object or Block Storage + Autoscaling + CloudWatch (metrics and monitoring) + Load Balancing + Platform Automation (Heat, Cloud Formations). Educate customers on the use of software orchestration and configuration management tools (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Salt) in their Cloud implementation. Work with customers to deploy PaaS (Cloud Foundry, OpenShift) on top of existing IaaS services from OpenStack. Advise on just about everything that falls under the Cloud umbrella from physical infrastructure up through application logic.

Eucalyptus IaaS is a private Cloud (Infrastructure as a Service) offering which is Amazon AWS API compatible. It is the on-premise version of AWS, so to speak. It functions as if you have your own AWS region in your data center. In my role as Chief Enterprise Solutions Architect, I travel around the country working face to face with customers across many industries. Customers range from SME to Fortune 500. I consult with each customer and discuss their plans for migrating applications to a Cloud platform. Typical topics covered are Advanced System Architecture and Design, Deployment and Management of a private Cloud platform, migration of existing applications to a Cloud, refactoring of applications for an elastic paradigm, designing fault-tolerant distributed applications, Application architecture and many others. Of particular note is that during this period, we had the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a customer, and worked closely with them to develop what would become the NIST Definition of Cloud Computing. This was very early in the process of NIST developing their entire portfolio of publications revolving around cloud.
