Profile bio

About Ernie Hetrick

I'm a Senior Engineer and Project Manager with broad Alaskan Commercial, Institutional and Industrial HVAC, Plumbing, Piping, Controls and Fire Protection skills. I've got the comprehensive expertise required to put together mechanical system solutions that meet clients' needs. I excel at identifying problems, defining solutions and producing designs with team-oriented projects but am equally capable when working on my own.Over the past twenty years I've worked in well over 120 remote Alaskan communities in all areas of the state. My village projects include dozens of water and wastewater plants, dozens of diesel generator plants and wind, solar, biomass and heat recovery systems to support them. I've helped with the design of nearly twenty new schools and major remodels. On our military bases I've laid out miles of steam and condensate distribution piping and worked on subdivision-wide hydronic distribution systems. I designed the HVAC and plumbing systems for a LEED-certified Air Force dormitory and the fire protection systems for F-22 hangers. The Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility has relied on my booster pump and pressure reducing station designs for years, and I have designed HVAC systems for many of their industrial and commercial facilities.More important than the number or location of projects I’ve worked on are the relationships I’ve built in Alaska with clients; local, state and federal agencies; other engineers; and contractors. These relationships allow me to be successful with a large range of project types.

Listed skills include Hvac And Steam System Design, Building And Process Controls, Fire Protection, Flexible And Collaborative Team Building, and 3 others.

Ernie Hetrick work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Principal Mechanical Engineer

Current

Anchorage, Alaska

In 2007 I returned to EDC as an equal owner with two partners. I advanced the project management skills I learned at USKH and added business skills as well. At EDC my work has consisted of about one third steam and condensate piping projects at Alaska's military bases and one third piping, pumping and HVAC for the Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility. The remaining work has included control systems, biomass energy systems, energy analysis and modeling, heat recovery systems, fuel farms, rural water and sewer plants, and third party project reviews to name a few. I am an excellent report writer, (surprisingly) enjoy writing project specifications, am an expert with AutoCAD and fluent in Revit.

Jan 2007 - Present

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Uskh Inc.

Wasilla, Alaska

I was the Wasilla office Employee of the Year in 2006, and the Mechanical Designer of Record for part of my time with USKH. USKH allowed me to continue expanding and refining my designs for piping, pumping, heating and ventilating, fire protection, and control systems. I also performed energy audits and construction review. I designed the HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems for five new schools and seven major school remodels in rural Alaska. USKH's broad project base provided me with many opportunities for large residential and commercial design experience.

Jan 2002 - Dec 2006

Mechanical Engineer

Wasilla, Alaska

I earned both my Engineer-in-Training and Professional Engineer licenses while at EDC while designing primarily rural Alaska utilities and public works, including water and wastewater treatment plants and distribution systems. I designed the HVAC, plumbing, process piping and pumping systems, and freeze protection for washeterias, treatment plants and distribution piping systems. I also designed commercial and industrial facilities, electric power generation systems, schools, and steam systems for military installations.

Sep 1995 - Dec 2001

Mechanical Engineer

Alaska Power Systems, Inc.

Anchorage, Alaska

My project work in Alaska began on the Akutan hybrid hydro-diesel-electric power plant, where I worked to balance and optimize water use and diesel fuel consumption. I designed and constructed six remote diesel-electric power modules for both village and communications site applications. Four of these projects included a review of and connection to existing tank farms. I worked on the Alaska Department of Energy Power Plant Circuit Rider program which took me to over fifty rural Alaska communities.
