About Ernst Hafen
I have over 30 years of experience in academic research and peer review evaluation (33 of which as a professor) and 14 years as founder and advisor of biotech companies. My goal is to assist scientific discovery and its efficient translation into products the help society and the economy.I am an advocate for citizens to gain control over the use of their personal data and thereby to democratise the personal data economy. A vastly better understanding of health and disease at the level of the individual can be achieved when large numbers of people control their data and agree to contribute their genomic and phenotypic information (information about themselves) to scientific investigations. In 2-3 years, whole genome sequencing will costs less that $ 200. Furthermore, over 150'000 health apps on mobile phones permit the recording of a vast array of health parameters. The problem is that all these medical and other personal data are locked in incompatible silos and citizens become increasingly dependent on multinational data companies (digital feudalism). MIDATA.coop enables citizens to securely store, manage and control access to their personal data by helping them to establish and own national/regional not-for-profit MIDATA cooperatives. MIDATA cooperatives act as the fiduciaries of their members’ data. As MIDATA members, citizens can visualize and analyze their personal data. They can actively contribute to medical research and to clinical trials by providing access to sets of their personal data across cooperatives.

It promotes that view – now strongly enforced by the EU GDPR – that citizens/patients should possess control over their health data (including fitness, nutrition, genome and medical data). As the ultimate aggregators of personal data citizens possess a new power to actively participate in medical research by giving access to the various types of their personal health data. The association also promotes the formation of non-profit health data platform cooperatives. This lead to the foundation of the MIDATA.coop health data cooperative.
