About Erté Degarces

The best part of the work I do is I get to say ‘yes.’ That’s the mission: help artists do something that’s never been done before—big or small, analog or digital, flush with cash or a tiny budget. My job, at large, is to employ my broad understanding of fabrication, installation, and art theory to materialize ideas with an artist and develop modes of presentation to give an audience the most effective experience of the artwork.By necessity I am a multi-skilled person—a swiss army knife. I picked up the straight forward stuff by doing everything from building budgets to ‘not dropping’ the Monet. More than that, I design and communicate with contextual sensitivity by finding salience in nuance, and I protect that nuance at every step in a production process that might otherwise grind down the edges of a good idea. Fabrication-heavy projects, such as sidony o’neal’s 2022 solo show at PICA, lead me to be a translator and advocate for the work with tradespeople who are generally unfamiliar and uninterested in artistic discourse. My challenge is to get them to adopt the ideas and make decisions that protect and enhance the sense of nuance. Success here is a point of pride for me because I feel it proceeds from my wide and dynamic spectrum of experience and an ethic for constant learning, which I give credit for the empathetic perspective I take when transacting professionally.Lighting, however, is my jewel in the process. Light is vision; the material that bridges the audience to the art. At its highest levels it sets mood and primes the eyes to see; at base its absence brings death to visual art, which teeters precariously at the brink of being de-materialized by the utter permanence of a light switch, forgotten. As a lighting consultant, I help art spaces develop systems that are prepared for the innumerable possibilities that may enter the building over the next 15 years, or however long the equipment may last.
