Effie [she/her]I am a Media Studies PhD candidate in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS) at Western University. I hold a Master’s degree in English literature from the University of Massachusetts Boston.I have served my university community in a number of ways including as an Executive member of the Society of Graduate Students, a graduate representative on University Senate and, more recently, the sole graduate representative on the University's Board of Governors. Within my Faculty, I led a number of committees focused on growth and community for graduate students. Additionally, I co-organized the September 17th 2021 Anti-Gender Based and Sexual Violence Walk Out at Western University; this massive movement, which was planned over the course of five days, saw 10,000 attendees come out in support. Since then, I co-founded the not-for-profit organization Safe Campus Coalition (SCC) with those same colleagues. My dissertation and research focuses on whether storytelling and the affordances of new media platforms offer avenues that help address the tensions found in fandoms and in storytelling. This project is primarily focused on how individuals, particularly with marginalized identities, use new media platforms to restory their identities and to collaboratively (re)construct the storyworld. It also begins applying ideas of data ethics to the field of fan studies and to fanworks.
