As the Development Officer for a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans, I collaborate with colleagues to write funding applications that secure more than $8M annually through as many as 20 major proposals for research, education, and direct-action initiatives. My role includes identifying grant opportunities, submitting applications and, where needed, coordinating reporting for funded projects -- all of which requires cultivating strong relationships with program and finance staff, as well as government agencies. Achievements include:✪ Creating systems to increase fundraising effectiveness, such as an online library for frequently requested grant information.✪ Co-developing a proposal that secured nearly $1M in seed funding to develop a sustainability assessment framework for small-scale fisheries in the Canadian Arctic.✪ Mentoring a direct report as she grew from an internally focused service role to a fundraiser and relationship manager.

In my role with Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) & UBC Hospital Foundation, I identified and documented priorities around equipment, research, and programs, then translated this information into compelling cases for support. To achieve this, I liaised with hospital and health authority staff and worked with major gift fundraisers to match the 2 hospitals’ needs with donors’ interests. Our combined efforts resulted in three gifts of more than $1M and several 5- and 6-figure gifts. Achievements include:✪ Producing several one-pagers for fundraisers to use in early-stage conversations with donors, each of which focused on a priority area in research or patient care. ✪ Writing multiple tailored stewardship reports, a process that involved translating scientific and medical terminology into engaging stories illustrating how donors’ generosity was transforming patient care, health outcomes, and people’s lives.

As the Gift & Estate Planning Coordinator for BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, I was tasked with attracting new legacy donors and strengthening relationships with existing legacy donors. I accomplished these goals by creating marketing materials and helping to develop an effective outreach strategy targeted to financial advisors and the Lower Mainland’s Chinese-Canadian community. Achievements include:✪ Interviewing legacy donors and translating their motivations for giving into stories to use in the marketing materials I created.✪ Planning and executing four sold-out events for Cantonese-speaking community - two for potential donors and two for financial advisors.✪ Managing the production of the hospital’s first-ever video to honor several legacy donors. In addition to drafting the creative brief, I recruited the cast, organized the filming venue, and managed the budget.

Achievements include:✪ Creating a book to chronicle the impact of a transformational gift and a photo album that commemorated the opening of our childcare center.✪ Developing a marketing brochure for Chinese-speaking legacy prospects.

In addition to researching, drafting, and editing internal and external communications, I organized fundraising and appreciation events and led volunteer teams. As a project manager for the foundation’s multimillion-dollar direct-response marketing program, I tracked timelines, proofed creative content, verified donor data and produced revenue reports to measure the program’s fundraising results. Alongside these activities, I helped a director and 10-member committee organize two province-wide lotteries that raised funds for BC Children’s Hospital’s most urgent needs.
