During that time, he developed and independently executed research projects related to college athletics; consumer satisfaction; student health and behavior; and the experience of students with learning disabilities. His work on these projects affords me the opportunity to speak to Elton’s research skillset and his ability to rapidly learn new skills. Elton has an innate gift for qualitative research. During data collection, his strong communication skills and approachability allow him to easily establish rapport with study participants. Meanwhile, his strong analytical skills make him adept at the sort of inductive approaches commonly employed by qualitative researchers. Finally, and perhaps even more remarkably for an undergraduate student, Elton displays a particularly strong sensitivity to how information is best presented to different audiences and in different forms. I can offer no more compelling example of Elton’s capacity in this regard than his presentation at the 2013 NASPA Conference, where he presented his own original, peer-reviewed research to a national audience. Though my work with Elton has focused principally on qualitative research, I have also had the opportunity to supervise his quantitative work when he served as a temporary assistant on a project related to college athletics. In this role, he has displayed a facility in gathering and cleaning quantitative data; identifying the type of numeric data with which he is working; selecting an appropriate means of analysis; and representing the data visually. As part of this project, I have frequently asked Elton to communicate with senior members of the College’s leadership team as well as to participate in meetings with a variety of institutional stakeholders. He has consistently comported himself with the utmost professionalism, and I am always confident that he will represent me, my office, and the institution well when I am not present."
