Juho Akseli Tarkiainen perusti kultasepänliikkeen Viipuriin vuonna 1918. Ennen liikkeen perustamista hän ehti olla opissa alan parhaiden kultaseppämestareiden liikkeissä Turussa, Helsingissä ja Tukholmassa.Juha Akseli oli ammattinsa hallitseva kultaseppä ja samalla yritteliäs liikemies.Viipurin liike kohosikin vaatimattomasta alusta yhdeksi huomattavimmista alanyrityksistä. Korujen ohella antiikkihopea muodosti merkittävän osan liikkeen myyntivalikoimasta. Ensimmäisen maailmansodan jälkeen Viipuri oli merkittävä vanhan venäläisen hopean osto- ja myyntipaikka. Talvisodan aikana toiminta Viipurissa jouduttiin keskeyttämään. Sotaa seuranneena vuonna liike avattiin kuitenkin uudelleen Helsinkiin. Noista päivistä asti kultasepänliike J.A. Tarkiainen on toiminut Helsingissä vanhoja perinteitä noudattaen.
