PhD aimed at deciphering the minimum requirements allowing the development of oxygenic photogranules (OPGs), roughly spherical phototrophic aggregates. These aggregates contain a mat-like outer layer densely populated by gliding filamentous cyanobacteria embedded in a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances. They have the potential to be applied in aeration-free wastewater treatment and the produced phototrophic biomass can be turned into a resource, contributing to a circular economy. I investigated the microbial communities of photogranules to identify microbial key players. I isolated cyanobacteria from OPGs and cultivated them under different light and nutrient conditions to evaluate their granulation ability and the production of biopolymers.
