Research Intern

Washington D.C.

The central focus of my internship involved leading thousands of visitors to participate in hand-on activities and archival research to support teacher workshops, specifically, Native American archival research. As a Research Intern, I requested boxes pertaining to Native American history between 1700s and 1900s. I recorded the physical condition of the documents and provided a content summary of each box. Some examples of archival documents I read include letters and blueprints regarding railway construction on Native American land and "Indian Removal" from their reservations. I then provided a list of archival boxes to the Education Director to use for the teacher workshops, where the teachers then select historical primary documents to incorporate into their lesson plan. In addition, I led students in finding, selecting, and analyzing primary sources to help them make connections to the Constitution and to understand how the U.S government functions. I also contributed to the design of "Stand Up and Be Counted", an interactive human game board that teaches children how ratified amendments gave certain civil rights to underrepresented groups.
