In 2014, when I experienced my first Pilates duet with my wife at Pilates Heights in Bernal, I knew immediately that something different was possible when combining breath, technique, rehabilitation and body awareness. Growing up as an avid athlete, Pilates tapped into my appreciation for precision, progression and physical empowerment. For 6 years, I explored many kinds of Pilates studios in San Francisco and didn't think that it would be possible to find a home studio that made space for me to be fully seen in a queer non-binary body.Living and working in the more sedentary nature of the pandemic brought back symptoms of plantar fasciitis - this was my wake up call to return to Pilates with more consistency and self advocacy. More importantly, I was ready to commit to aligning my practice with Pilates teachers who shared and reflected my values of diversity, access and body inclusion. Every person who wants to try Classical Pilates should have the access to do so. Everybody should have the opportunity to work with an instructor who is invested in your goals, growth and personal journey with fitness. How can I help you build a relationship with Pilates that names and breaks the barriers that get in the way of your physical wellness?I'm a part of the inaugural BIPOC cohort of Pilates Interns.
